SHELTER
Shelter
We’re taught to live like God is watching,
But there’s no Heaven there to save us.
That our lives are just a one-off show,
But there’s no audience left to praise us.
So we fly without destination,
Love completely without hesitation,
And express ourselves through sublimation.
We know the fragile joy of silence,
How quick the calm can turn to violence.
We’ve learned that hidden gems shine a bit brighter,
That there is no difference between The Artist and The Fighter.
We’ve learned to smile in the dark and have mastered the subtle art,
Of ignoring the vacancy in our hearts.
Because while the dark can hide the truth,
Only light can blind us.
And when we’re lost inside ourselves,
How very few can find us.
So, remember, it’s not the end, just the passing of a storm.
But we’ll be here to help you, protect you,
Keep you warm.
Because we make others happy, to revel in joy we can’t feel.
While sitting quietly convinced that we were never real.
So let us be your Shelter.
We who know the value of a soul not yet sold,
How to take silver linings and make them gold,
And, yes, just like you,
We know what it was like to grow up in the cold.
